Electronic Floating Power (E-FP)
Electronic Floating Power (E-FP)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Informal News & Chat for TOC Members
Thank you to all the TOC members who responded so positively to edition 2 of e-FP which was issued at the beginning of October.
As you will read in the next edition of Floating Power (which I'm hoping to get to you at the beginning of January - assuming that I can get the printers to finish it before they break up for their Christmas holidays on 23rd December) there has been one complaint to the TOC chairman from one of the section co-ordinators who feels he has become a second-class citizen because he doesn't have email.
The matter was considered by the TOC committee at it's meeting on 23rd November and was put to the members present at the AGM later the same day. Overwhelmingly the feeling at both meetings was that the concept of e-FP was always an on-line newsletter and therefore the TOC would not be printing copies and posting them to email-less members.
One of the steps that the committee has taken to try to widen access is to post copies of e-FP on the Club's website so that any members without personal email access who wish to read the newsletter can go to an internet cafe or their local library to access them via the internet connections available there.
Since edition 2 of e-FP was issued a further 30 email addresses have been added to the circulation list and you will see that I have also added to the bottom of this newsletter the facility for members to forward it to friends who, should they want to, can then sign up to receive future copies of the newsletter themselves.
To those members concerned about the cost of e-FP I can tell you that the TOC pays $15 per month for the facility to send e-FP newsletters Iincluding the storage space and the reports available regarding the delivery and reading of the newsletters). There is no charge for actually sending the newsletters themselves so in addition to the newsletters planned for the beginning of February, April, June, August, October and December each year any ad hoc newsletters issued at other times will effectively be free of charge.
As always, if you have comments on the contents of this newsletter, if you would like to respond to any items you read here, or if you have news items or snippets of
information that you think might be of interest to other TOC Members please reply to me at editor@traction-owners.co.uk
Finally - from my wife and myself may we wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009 - with an ample supply of enjoyable Tractioning!!!!!
November/December issue of Floating Power
The November/December edition of Floating Power was posted to all TOC Members at the beginning of November - so if your copy hasn't yet arrived please contact me and I'll arrange for a replacement copy to be sent to you.
January/February 2009 issue of Floating Power
The deadline for input to the January/February edition of Floating Power is this coming Friday (5th December) - so if you have any input please get it to me as soon as possible.
The deadline is earlier than normal because a) the magazine has to be at the printers before the 15th/16th December (latest) in order for myself and my wife to collect it by mid-day on 23rd December, and b) as I have now taken over as editor of the 2CVGB magazine I also need to produce a copy of their club magazine before Christmas as well.
2009 TOC Calendar
A copy of the 2009 TOC Calendar was posted out to all members with their copy of the November/December edition of Floating Power.
Member response has again been positive and of the 100 additional copies printed for sale only 24 still remain.
So if you are thinking about buying a copy to send to a friend or relative be quick or you may be disappointed.
As an additional service I am posting calendars direct to friends/relatives for members. The calendars are sent with an insert in the calendar saying that this calendar has been sent to you as a gift by ..............
So far this year I have sent calendars to Australia, the USA, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and France as well as the UK and - really moving into the e-world - I have even received payments via Paypal.
2010 TOC Calendar
If you missed out on getting your car featured in the 2009 calendar then how about submitting a photograph for the 2010 Calendar?
I have already received the first entry for the 2010 calendar competition which - breaking news - could feature colour for the first time in a TOC publication.
What do you think?
Since its inception all the editions of Floating Power (and for that matter the 2008 and 2009 TOC Calendars) have been printed in black and white.
A question was raised at the AGM by Richard Carlin about why future editions of Floating Power could not be printed in colour.
The TOC committee has always taken the view that the black and white only format of Floating Power reflects the era of the Traction itself and is an essential part of the style and brand of the TOC.
The committee considers that colour - even just for the cover for instance - would detract from that image.
There is also of course the question of cost - printing the magazine in full colour would virtually double its cost.
There are no real technical constraints that would stop the magazine being printed in colour - in fact I already produce it in full colour and turn it into black and white as part of the process of producing the press-ready PDFs that go to the printer.
As hinted at above, one of the ideas discussed at the AGM was the possibility of printing some or all of the 2010 calendar photographs in colour - with the August 2008 photograph of Mike Tebbett's car in a field of sunflowers being cited as an example of a photograph that absolutely cried out for colour.
So what do you think?? Should the 2010 calendar be fully or partially printed in colour, should Floating Power be fully or partially printed in colour or should we remain traditional in our approach and stay with black and white?
Let me know what you think - also, as I'm planning some changes to the style and layout of Floating Power for the January/February edition, please also let me know what you think about the new look for 2009 once you have seen it.
New in the Club Shop
Tony Piper has restocked the Club Shop with new 75th anniversary regalia as reported in the last edition of Floating Power.
Stocks are fast running out so if you want to be sporting the latest in TOC fashion you should give Tony a ring asap on the telephone number you'll find in your copy of Floating Power.
(Sorry about this but every time I type Tony's phone number Skype decides that it is going to display it as a hyperlink - which for some reason is incompatible with the software I'm using to prepare this email. As a last resort the number is zero two zero eight five three two one four six eight).
Also just arrived in the Club Shop are copies of John Reynold's biography of Andre Citroen.
Before you dismiss this - these are brand new copies of the second edition of John's excellent hardback book published about three years ago by Haynes and on sale from Haynes at £30 a copy.
This second edition is a much improved and enlarged rewrite of the original book and contains a whole section on the Traction Avant as well as fascinating insights provided by the Citroen family into the real circumstances surrounding the 'bankruptcy' and their experiences during the second world war as a result of their religion.
Compared to the original the second edition contains about 25% more text and 30% more photographs and is an absolute bargain at just £20 plus £2.50 postage and package (UK) from the Club Shop.
Stocks of the book at this price are strictly limited so it must be first come first served .
If you want to buy yourself a Christmas present (or you want your spouse/partner to buy you one) contact Tony at the above telephone number this week and he will post the items you want out to you in time for Christmas.
New TA Forum
Nicholas Greene, a recent and welcome new addition to the ranks of the TOC, has started a new TA forum which you can find at:
http://tractionavant.forumcircle.com/portal.php .
Nicholas lives in France and from time to time produces articles for the Citronean about living and driving there. Hopefully in the future we can look forward to his writing similar articles for Floating Power.
Meanwhile why not get your fingers whizzing across the keyboard to see what is being said about the TA on this new forum?
Did anyone famous own your Traction before you?
You will remember that in the last newsletter I asked if your car was previously owned by a well known celebrity if you could please drop me a line so that we can satisfy Mick Popka's curiosity.
Well a number of readers responded:
David Strang
told me that his 11B was previously owned by members of the Conran family including Tom Conran and that it used to stand outside the Conran restaurant Bibendyum.Paul Orton
told me that he bought his car (3 PNO, previously 903 FUF) from Nick Wilton, an actor and writer (Carrott's Lib, amongst other minor things). See http://uk.imdb.com/name/nm0934360/filmokey for details on him. He owned the car from about 1987 to 2003 during which time he drove about 10,000 miles in it.Roger Prior
, a luddite who still has a paper driving licence, bought his H van (WGF 205W) from Dave Davies. Apparently the H van had a very expensive camper conversion done to it by the bod who also did J Saville's caravans, and the H van he believes won a concours at a CCC rally in the early '80s.Nicholas Brooking Clark
tells me that his Commerciale was owned before him by the man who is the chief film director for Aardman - makers of Wallace & Gromit films.How visible is your Traction?
Are you concerned about the fact that the brake lights on the rear of your Traction may not be visible - especially in poor weather?
If so you may be interested in the details forwarded to me by David Boyd of a high visibility, thin profile LED brake light that fits inside your rear window.
David says that Richard Boudrais of Quebec in Canada has recently fitted one of these BrakeLighter units in his 15/6 and says it is very effective.
The BrakeLighter which is a high visibility LED unit, costs $53.95 + shipping (which is not bad for peace of mind when making emergency stops). It can be wired to act as a repeater for you indicator lamps as well as a third brake light and can be supplied as either a 6v or 12v unit.
Further details on the BrakeLighter can be obtained by email from jsbieback@sbcglobal.net.
